There Are Many Lovely Things
Between 2008 and 2010, I created many calligraphic versions of the same text. The project gave me a chance to investigate what I could do with words, and what I'd actually like to look at. I've exhibited them in New York at Ivan Karp's, in San Francisco and Los Angeles with George Lawson, and in San Francisco at the Jack Fischer Gallery. Many have sold, but a number of them are now on exhibit at the Sanchez Art Center; they'll move back to Jack Fischer's after the end of that show, 29 March. Each one measures 10" x 6", mixed media on cardboard.

Do | Undo at Sanchez Art Center
-->
Sanchez Art Center is honored to present
an exhibition of artworks by Ward Schumaker, titled do | undo. The exhibition opens Friday, 27 February, with
a reception from 7 to 9 pm, and is on view through 29 March.
Ward Schumaker’s exhibition, curated by Jerry Barrish, includes large acrylic paintings, collages, mixed media works on paper, and small sculptures. Several works, such as the collages and the larger mixed media works Disappear for a While and Red Telephone, will be shown for the first time here at Sanchez.
The hallmark of Schumaker’s work is layering with paint, mixed media, text, and abstract patterns. As the artist says, his work involves a great deal of “painting in and painting out, doing and undoing, making marks and erasing them,” hence the exhibit title do | undo.
The effect can be mesmerizing, and yet Schumaker’s works are ultimately quite simple and straightforward—in a meandering sort of way. In his work you will find a refreshing sense of humor and the feeling of storytelling, without any of the guideposts of conventional stories.
Schumaker has shown in New York, San Francisco, Shanghai, UC Berkeley, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Charleston, Miami, and Nashville, and has been collected widely. In 2013 Jack Fischer Gallery in SF mounted Schumaker’s solo show titled Years of Pretty.
Also showing: Printmakers––San Francisco Art Institute
Curated by Timothy Berry, SFAI Professor
Apolitical, Be Political--Art Guild of Pacifica
Gallery hours after Feb 27: Fri, Sat, Sun 1–5 pm
Office hours: Tues, Wed, Thurs 1–5 pm

Coffin Laughter
Coffin Laughter was created in an edition of ten (+ one artist's copy), 11.25" x 7.5", 32 pages with stamped cover, hand-stenciling on Stonehendge, and a binding by John Demerritt,

By the time I got to working on these last two edition books, I was no longer so taken with making each page in each edition match as closely as possible, and I started playing with outcomes. In this book, for example, the last page in some reads: ha-ha-ha-ha; in others: ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha; and in others: sputter-sputter. I don't prefer one to another, but I enjoy giving each its existence.
