When we left for New York in January, I figured we’d be back-and-forth between the coasts frequently, say, every six or eight weeks. But health and family problems kept us in Manhattan and we only recently got back to San Francisco. It was great to see our neighbors and old friends, enjoy the mild weather, work in our garden, and walk along the bay each morning as the sun rose. And it was especially enlightening to return to my old studio: the paints and papers and sketches and canvas were just as I’d left them, along with the history: there remained a lot of history in those rooms. As much as I’d hoped to gain by leaving all this behind and visiting New York, I now felt I’d gain by having them available to work with again. Which was good, because after finishing the group of Dumb Boxes, I felt a need to do some small works that veered in every direction, much like I had done in the past with my collages. So I produced works using sketches and ideas from as much as twenty years back. I put together the scrap and ideas in San Francisco and finished them up here in New York.
