“You’ve
a dozen pots of paint on your right, a hundred brushes on your left, and you’re
driving around the studio full speed with the music cranked up loud––Prokofiev,
say, or Shostakovich––but you’re not listening to the music, you’re listening
for the voice that will instruct: paint me red, paint me blue! And suddenly
you’re the luckiest person in the world because the voice begins to speak.”
